An estate often holds more value than people expect – furniture, china, art, jewellery and collectables that can be sold or valued instead of thrown away. Finding out what has value before the clearance can both bring extra money and feel important to the family.
We are not an auction house, but as part of an estate clearance we routinely set aside items that may have value, document them and let you choose: keep, sell yourself, or have them valued. This guide covers how it works.
What has value
What in an estate usually has value?
What most often surprises people is that everyday items can be worth more than expected, while things that look attractive sometimes have no market. Look out for:
- Furniture – older quality furniture, design classics and pieces from known Swedish makers.
- China and glass – dinner sets, crystal and older tableware from known brands.
- Art and paintings – both signed works and older reproductions can have value.
- Jewellery, watches and silver – even damaged or outdated pieces can be valuable for the material.
- Coins, stamps and medals – collectables are often valued separately from the rest of the contents.
- Books and antiques – older first editions and genuine antiques can surprise.
- Tools and machinery – quality tools in good condition often have an active resale market.

How it works
How valuation works with us
At the free inspection we go through the contents together with you. If we see items that may have value we point them out - you do not need to be able to judge it yourself. You then choose one of three options for each item: keep it, sell it through us or an external party, or let us take care of it as part of the clearance in exchange for a deduction on the price.
We do not partner with one specific auction house but help you make an informed choice. For a professional valuation of antiques or art we recommend engaging a certified appraiser or an auction house in Gothenburg for those specific items, before the rest of the home is cleared.
Lowering the price
How value affects the clearance price
If the contents have a larger combined value it can be offset against the cost of the estate clearance - in practice lowering the final price. This applies above all when several items together have a clear market value, rather than a few small pieces.

A few things that make valuation smoother:
- Gather jewellery, watches and smaller valuables in one place so nothing is missed.
- Look for receipts, certificates of authenticity or valuation certificates that may accompany items.
- Feel free to photograph furniture and paintings you wonder about, so we can give an initial assessment before the visit.
- Hold off on throwing away or donating anything if you are unsure - better to ask once too often.
